Bird
Training
We provide specialised bird training services for exotic birds and birds of prey in and around Essex, built on the understanding that birds are complex creatures who need much more than just life in a cage. From cockatiels, lovebirds, lorikeets, parrots, and macaws to owls, hawks, kookaburras, cranes, and more, we work with a wide range of species, each with their own instincts, intelligence, and care requirements.
Every training programme is tailored around the bird’s natural behaviour, history, environment, and temperament. Whether working with a highly intelligent parrot or a focused bird of prey, our aim is not just obedience, but long-term welfare improvement, confidence building, and a stronger relationship between bird and keeper.
Behavioural Training
Behavioural training is the foundation of all successful bird keeping and focuses on understanding why unwanted behaviours occur rather than simply suppressing them. Many issues such as biting, screaming, feather plucking, avoidance, or aggression can be seen across both parrots and birds of prey, and are often linked to stress, lack of stimulation, or inconsistent handling.
Our approach uses positive reinforcement, gradual desensitisation, and structured trust-building exercises to reshape behaviour in a calm and ethical way. We work at the bird’s pace, carefully reading body language throughout to ensure they are never overwhelmed, whether that is a small parrot learning handling confidence or a raptor becoming comfortable with routine interaction.
Over time, this training helps birds become more relaxed during handling, more confident in different environments, and more predictable in day-to-day care. It significantly improves welfare by reducing stress and increasing mental stability through consistent, rewarding interaction between bird and keeper.
Free Flight Training
Free flight training is designed to safely develop a bird’s ability to fly outdoors or in large controlled spaces while maintaining reliable recall. This is especially important for birds of prey, which require structured flight conditioning, as well as larger parrots that benefit from high levels of physical and mental stimulation.
Training begins in controlled environments before progressing to more open areas, ensuring safety, confidence, and consistency are fully established first. We build strong recall through structured food motivation, repetition, and carefully managed distance work, ensuring the bird chooses to return willingly and confidently.
Alongside recall, free flight improves cardiovascular fitness, muscle strength, coordination, and natural behavioural expression. It also provides essential enrichment for both parrots and birds of prey, allowing them to engage with their environment in a way that closely reflects natural behaviour while remaining safely under control.
Trick & Enrichment Training
Trick and enrichment training is centred around mental stimulation and problem-solving, helping prevent boredom-related behaviours that are common in both captive parrots and under-stimulated birds of prey. This type of training plays a key role in maintaining emotional and psychological wellbeing.
We introduce structured behaviours such as target training, object interaction, retrieval exercises, and simple trick sequences. These are adapted based on species, personality, and confidence level, whether working with an inquisitive macaw or a more focused raptor in structured training.
Enrichment training also encourages natural behaviours such as foraging, exploration, and manipulation, giving birds a productive outlet for their intelligence. This helps reduce stress behaviours, increases engagement with their environment, and strengthens the bond between bird and keeper through positive interaction.
Free, No Obligation Initial Assessment
We offer a free initial assessment and meet-and-greet session for all bird training enquiries, whether you are working with a parrot, macaw, cockatiel, or a bird of prey such as an owl or hawk. This session allows us to observe your bird’s current behaviour, handling response, environment, and overall confidence levels.
We take time to understand your bird’s background, including any behavioural challenges, previous training history, and daily routine. Alongside this, we discuss your goals, whether that’s improving handling, building trust, developing recall, reducing stress behaviours, or progressing into free flight or enrichment work.
If you are preparing to bring a new bird into your home or collection, we can also carry out pre-arrival guidance. This helps you set up the correct environment and handling structure from day one, reducing stress for both you and the bird and creating a strong foundation for training and welfare.
Every programme we design is fully individualised. Whether working with highly intelligent parrots or sensitive birds of prey, we adapt each session to suit the species, temperament, and confidence level of the bird. Our approach is always calm, ethical, and focused on building trust first, ensuring training is safe, practical, and genuinely beneficial for long-term welfare.
